How long will my background check take to complete?

Most background checks take 72 hours to complete, but every background check is different. The turnaround time will vary with each report and delivery time is not guaranteed.

What are some reasons why my background check may be taking longer to complete?

The information you provided is incomplete or inaccurate.

We are waiting for a piece of information from you. If this is the case, you will have received a communication from us.

Your background check includes services (such as education verifications or US county checks) that depends on verifying information with third parties that have their own turnaround times

We are verifying international information, which has longer turnaround times.

How will I know that I have submitted my background check information?

When you submit your background check request, it will move from the Active Requests table, to the History Requests table and the status will show as SUBMITTED. If the status is SUBMITTED and CIS has not requested additional information from you, then your background check will be processing.

How will I know if my background check is being processed?

If CIS has not reached out to you requesting additional information, than your background check is being processed.

Will I get notified when my background check is complete?

Once your report is complete, the company who requested (and is paying for) the check on you will be notified and they will receive a copy of the report.

Please note: CIS is a background screening company, so we provide background check reports to our clients that request them. We do not influence or make hiring decisions, participate in the hiring process, review reports, evaluate the information on your report, etc. The company that requested the background check on you will make its own decision. Our team will not be able to provide you with any information surrounding hiring timelines or decisions, when you will receive a response, etc. For those questions, please reach out to the company that requested your background check.

Will someone contact me if there is a problem with my background check?

If we require additional information from you, you will have received an email from us. The email will specify what information we are looking for, and if applicable, a link within the email to upload documents. If you are uploading documents, please make sure that they are clear and legible. If you think CIS has reached out to you but do not have an email in your inbox, please make sure you also search your JUNK and SPAM folders. How do I provide new information to CIS?

If we require additional information from you, you will have received an email from us. The email will specify what information we are looking for, and if applicable, a link within the email to upload documents. If you are uploading documents, please make sure that they are as clear and legible as possible. If you think CIS has reached out to you but do not have an email in your inbox, please make sure you also search your junk and spam folders.

What is included in my background check?

CIS provides many different background check services to our clients, who may request different services depending on their needs and requirements. To find out what services they have requested for your check, just check your homepage and it will list it under the request information.

What if I cannot remember all of the information that you are asking me to provide?

If there are certain details or dates that you cannot recall, please try and see if you can locate the needed information by referring to your resume, pay stubs/T4/ROE, diploma or transcripts, etc. If you are unable to find the required information to fill in the blanks, please try to provide as much information as possible and be as accurate as you can. As we will be verifying the information you provide, it is important that you DO NOT FABRICATE information just to fill in the blanks.

What if I do not consent to all of the searches being requested?

CIS requires your consent to complete your background check, and we will not perform any services without it. If you do not consent to the searches being requested, please contact the company that requested your background check and let them know.

What If I do not want CIS to conduct the searches that were requested?

As the background screening provider, CIS does not choose what services get requested. If you have concerns or questions about what services have been requested for your background check, you will need to direct those to the company that requested your background check.

Why do I need to provide my SIN?

Our clients often request a SIN Verification to ensure that the number you provide is valid and that you are eligible to work in Canada.

Why do I need to provide my SSN?

You will need to provide your SSN if our client has requested that we verify that the number is valid, or if we are conducting a US Criminal Background Check, as the first step of a US Criminal Background Check is to run an SSN Trace.

Is my information going to be kept confidential?

I can’t login to my account on the CIS Candidate Portal.

To login to your account here, use the email address and password that you entered when you created your account.

If you are still not able to login, it could be because:

  • There is an error with your password or email address. Make sure that you are using the email address that you used when you created your account and the correct password.
